Radio Day is celebrated in Russia as a day Communications Workers' Day. This celebration on May 7 commemorates the development of radio in Russia. In 1895 Russian physicist Alexander Popov successfully demonstrated practical application of electromagnetic (radio) waves.

This holiday as first celebrated in Russia in 1925, yet later anniversaries were poorly ovserved due to political situation in Russa, WW1 and later Civil War.

The 50th anniversary of Popov's invention concurred with the end of Great Patriotic War in Russia and victory over fascist Germany. Thus on May 2 1945 the decree to celebrate Radio Day througout the country was issued. Later Soviet government established May 7 to be the annual Radio Day.
