Novosibirsk is the largest industrial, scientific, cultural and administrative center of Siberia. It was founded in 1893, and at first functioned just as the settlement for the workers who built the bridge over the Ob River. Novosibirsk was supposed to be a local trade center, but since the October Revolution it gained the industrial importance despite the lack of precious mineral resources and was turning into cultural and scientific center. Gradually it was turned into the forth largest city of Russia. Formally an important industrial center, Novosibirsk is now mainly focused on business, science and transport.
Initially built to serve as an important railroad junction of the Trans-Siberian Railway, nowadays Novosibirsk is a major transportation junction. There is an international Airport Tolmachevo and two local airports accepting domestic flights. Novosibirsk is the access to the Ob River where main waterways lye through.
Nizhniy Novgorod covers an area of 260 square miles along the riverbanks of the Volga and Oka Rivers It is situated about 250 miles east from Moscow and is easily accessible by an overnight train by car or by air.
