Originally Nizhniy Novgoro) was a frontier fortress, a part of Rus fortification complex. The city was founded by Grand Prince Yuriy Vsevolodovich in 1221. Red-brick Kremlin, earliest preserved citadels in Russia was supposed to protect the state from the east and withstand Tatar sieges. It was built in the beginning of the 16th century on the hill at the influx of the Oka the River into the river Volga. The Kremlin is very similar to the one in Moscow, it was built to lodge the new a artillery system. The Kremlin includes all the ancient constructions of the city.
Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most ancient cities of Russian Federation Nizhny Novgorod (often called just "Nizhnij") is the 4th largest city in Russia with a population of 1.36 million. It is an important economic, transport and cultural centre of Russia. It is a canter of Novgorod region and of the Volga Federal District. The former name of the city from 1932 to 1990 was Gorkiy, after the writer Maxim Gorky who was born there. The city name literally means "Lower Newtown" to distinguish it from the older Veliky Novgorod.
Nizhniy Novgorod covers an area of 260 square miles along the riverbanks of the Volga and Oka Rivers It is situated about 250 miles east from Moscow and is easily accessible by an overnight train by car or by air. The historical, military, economic and cultural importance of Nizhniy Novgorod is proved by such names as Novgorod merchant Kuzma Minin, Knyaz Dmitry Pozharsky who expelled the Polish troups from Moscow, which put an end to the "Time of Troubles" and established the rule of the Romanov dynasty. Stroganovs, the wealthiest merchant family of Russia in 17-18 centuries had Novgord as a base of their commercial operations.
In the middle of the 19th cnetury Nizhnij Novgorod was a trade capital of the Russian Empire and became a primary inductrial center by the beginning the of 20th cnetury. Country -known large truck and tractor plant (GAZ), was buylt in Nizhnij in the late 1920s.
The city major attractions are: Kremlin, Pechersky Ascension Monastery, Smolenskaya and Rozhdestvenskaya Churches, Virgin's Nativity Church.
