Kazan is the eighth largest city of Russia and capital city of the Republic of Tatarstan Kazan was founded in 1401 and until the middle of the 16th century was a capital of a powerful Tartar khanate before it was besieged and conquered by Tsar Ivan IV Grozny who made Kazan khanate a part of Russian state. Tatar population was forced to settle outside the city, many were killed and repressed. The city experienced rebirth during the reign of Catherine the Great. It also revived as a Tatar cultural centre after the Revolution in 1905 , yet threatened again during the first and second world wars. Kazan revived in the 1990-s. Since 2000 Kazan has been renovated that already included rebuilding historical center, including its Kremlin, opening Kazan metro, renovating the objects of Ttatar culture and religion.
Today Kazan has some amazingly beautiful sites such as famous Kazan Kremlin, chief historic citadel of Tatarstan, built by the order of Ivan the Terrible, which was declared a World Heritage Site in the year 2000. There is also the Annunciation Cathedral with its' five beautiful domes and the leaning Soyembika Tower. Kazan is an educational centre, where 55 institutes of higher education are located including Kazan State University founded in the beginning of the 19th cnetury, Kazan State Technological University, Kazan State Medical University, Kazan State Conservatory and others.
The population consists of ethnic Tatars and Russian and both Tatar and Russian language is widely spoken in the city.
Kazan is a large largest industrial and financial centre of Russia. It was center of the military industry, producing tanks and planes during WWII. Nowadays the main industries of the city are: mechanical engineering, chemical, petrochemical, light and food industries. Kazan hosts largest IT-park in Russia. The city is a unique combitation of historic city and modern megalopolis which attracts tourists from all rons the world.
Kazan has an International Airport. Flights arrive regularly from inside and outside the country. Lufthansa is the dominant airline for International Flights direct to Kazan. Other airlines require transfers in Moscow between Sheremetevo and Domodedovo airports.
